Superbad

10mSuperbad (2007): Two co-dependent high school seniors (Hill and Cera) are forced to deal with separation anxiety after their plan to stage a booze-soaked party goes awry.

This is the modern version of movies like Revenge of the Nerds, about high school kids looking for beer and girls. If you like that kind of movie, this is certainly a fine example.

As much as I enjoyed this movie, I did not have that type of high school experience, either because of my personality or the fact that I did not grow up in USA. So I don’t have that nostalgic feeling towards this type of movie.

That being said, there is plenty to enjoy in this movie. The main characters are likable, especially Evan (played by Arrested Developemnt’s Michael Cera). His character is just likable, he is a good kid but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t get into a lot of trouble. Seth on the other hand is someone who is looking for trouble, even though he doesn’t have the guts.

The surprise of the movie is certainly McLovin. He is the ultimate nerd who manages to get it all in this movie. That’s also thanks to the two weird cops, who are basically the adult version of these teenagers. Their performances felt a little bit too out there, not as realistic as the rest of the movie.

I like how the relationship with the girls ends up, even though someone else might think it’s too sweet. I didn’t like how the friendship between Evan and Seth was dealt with after the party. That scene felt pointless to me. It was dealt much more effectively at the end, when they go their separate ways with the girls.

Overall I laughed in many places, but I felt this either lacked heart, or I just didn’t feel attached to it. Not my favorite of the Apatow movies, but still enjoyable.
